The theme of the Second International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium will be "The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture". The aim of the symposium is to evaluate, from administrative, political, social, economic and religious perspectives, the impact of the political power that spread out from the Great Palace and the Blakhernai Palace to the rest of the empire and, to investigate the reflections of this power unto the cultural dimension.

Der Platonismus hat eine kontinuierliche Geschichte von den Anfängen der Akademie an; doch keineswegs waren es immer Platon selbst und seine Schriften, die im Mittelpunkt des Interesses standen. Zu bestimmten Zeiten fanden gerade die Überlieferungen besondere Aufmerksamkeit, die der Platonischen „Unterwelt“ zugerechnet werden, wie die Hermetischen Schriften oder die Chaldaeischen Orakel sowie weitere Texte und Lehren, die sich unter dem Begriff der „Esoterik“ zusammenfassen lassen, wie er heutigem Sprachgebrauch geläufig ist. Neben der Spätantike sind vor allem zwei Epochen bedeutsam: zum einen die „Byzantinische Renaissance“ um das 11. Jahrhundert, die nach konventioneller Epochengliederung ins Mittelalter gehört, zum anderen die italienische Renaissance im 15. bis ins 16. Jahrhundert. Die Forschung hat bereits wichtige Ergebnisse gezeitigt; doch hat es bislang keinen Versuch gegeben, die Studien zur Auseinandersetzung mit Esoterik und Platonismus im Byzantinischen Mittelalter und – davon essentiell abhängig – der italienischen Renaissance gezielt zusammenzuführen. Einen Ansatz, dies zu unternehmen, stellt die hier angekündigte Tagung dar.

The XIX Finnish Symposium on Late Antiquity will be organized on October 15-16, 2010. The aim of the symposium is to bring together students and scholars with an interest in Late Antiquity from a variety of universities and disciplines. This year, we explore the aspects of depression, recovery and renaissance related to the every-day life, but suggestions for papers dealing with other topics will also be considered. Our main aim is to stimulate interdisciplinary dialogue between philology, archaeology, history, theology and other disciplines that deal with Late Antiquity. Geographically, the focus of the symposium is on the Mediterranean world.

Istanbul Sehir University and the World History Association proudly announce a symposium focusing on the world-historical significance of Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations, 330-1922. The symposium will consist of approximately 50 papers by Turkish and international participants, plus several plenary sessions. The official languages of the symposium are English and Turkish. Persons not presenting a paper may also register for the conference, attend at no fee, and will be eligible for discounted lodging at 4- and 5-star conference hotels in the Old City. On-line registration and hotel information will be found at this web site soon after 15 January 2010. In order to participate in any capacity, persons must register on-line no later than 15 September 2010.
